FabCon Vienna 2025 recap: Microsoft Fabric BPS and other new features

FabCon Europe in Vienna took place a few days ago. As so often, Microsoft presented exciting innovations that are directly relevant for SAP customers and anyone who wants to automate their SAP data integration in Microsoft Fabric. In this review, I would like to summarize the most important points for you:

• the status of Open Mirroring for SAP sources,
• the private preview of a Microsoft Fabric ABAP connector,
• and brand new: Microsoft Fabric Business Process Solutions.

I will also show why these developments do not diminish the value of dab Nexus, but on the contrary – how they make dab Nexus even more relevant as the central solution for integration between SAP and Microsoft Fabric.

Open Mirroring for SAP: Where we stand today 

Open Mirroring makes it easy to automatically load SAP data into Microsoft Fabric. Since the end of last year, our customers have been able to use Open Mirror technology for SAP data directly with dab Nexus.

This approach is becoming increasingly attractive for Microsoft customers. Those who use Open Mirror can mirror changes to OneLake in near real time and reuse them in all Fabric workloads. One huge advantage of the mirror is that it has the capacity of the selected Fabric capacity, i.e., 16 TB for F16, and Microsoft covers the computing costs for merging the data.

This provides a predictable way to load data from your SAP system directly into Fabric.

The first customers have already discovered this technology for themselves. The advantage with dab Nexus is that existing extraction packages can continue to be used—only the data destination changes. This makes it quick and easy to switch from conventional data sinks, such as SQL or ADLS Gen2, to Fabric.

Microsoft Fabric ABAP Connector (Private Preview): Opportunities, limitations, and alternatives with dab Nexus

At FabCon in Vienna, a private preview for an ABAP-based connector was also presented. The idea: to transfer individual tables from SAP to Fabric without the need for third-party tools – a useful approach if you want to quickly set up a prototype or perform a specific analysis.

However, this is also where the limitations currently lie: the preview requires extensive SAP settings, and there is no packaging for extracting many different tables, as is customary with dab Nexus. There is also no SAP certification.

In short: the solution may be exciting for smaller tests, but the Microsoft Fabric ABAP Connector does not deliver for regular extractions of many tables with large amounts of data.

New: Microsoft Fabric Business Process Solutions – Process packages for a quick start

Business Process Solutions is a new Microsoft accelerator that helps companies consolidate fragmented data sources and implement AI-powered business processes faster.

The solution combines prebuilt data models in Microsoft Fabric with intelligent Copilot agents to create a unified data foundation for analytics, automation, and AI.

Specifically, this means: 

• Prebuilt data models for core processes such as finance, sales, and procurement
• Power BI dashboards for immediate insights
• Copilot agents for “insight-to-action” – act directly from Teams or source systems
• Automatic transformations for consistent analysis (e.g., currency conversion)
• Integrated security and compliance

With the Microsoft Fabric BPS, companies can move faster from raw data to decisions and actions without complex integration projects.

The result: accelerated digital transformation, lower risk, and maximum value from data and AI.
