On April 9th, 2018, Rödl & Partner organized their second family business day in Bielefeld in combination with a start-up convention. The topic of this event was "Generation Digital". What initially seems somewhat alienating has been brought together surprisingly well by Rödl & partner. There are enough points of contact between for generations existing companies and innovative business start-ups, so both can learn a lot from each other. A perfect place for exciting conversations and networking.

In this blog post I will show you how you can objectify and automate risk assessment within your company by linking it with data analyses.

Risk management has always been a key element of a company’s management process. Risks are identified and assessed, measures are taken to mitigate risks and new assessments are performed at regular intervals. This process is present in many companies. Risk assessment is often based on a professional judgement of one or more managers. But why should it always be individuals who have to re-assess risks when data can supply far more objective criteria? With its autumn 2017 release, ACL GRC prepared the way for data-driven risk management. I will now proceed to explain the Assessment Drivers (“key assessment factors”) and the associated benefits in more detail.

In this blog post I will discuss “free goods”. They play an important role both in projects which we implement for our customers and also in our dab:AnalyticSuite, and form the subject of many queries. Important factors include profitability in terms of calculating profit in a customer’s business, compliance (bribery through payments in kind, formation of black accounts, undue advantage) or simply monitoring possible IT interface errors which can result in proper deliveries inadvertently not being invoiced.

Before we get down to distribution, sending the questionnaires to the recipients, there remains the question of what to do with them. Depending on the application ACL presents a number of possibilities:

Data analytics can produce interesting results. They help to identify problems in processes, to reveal cases of fraud, to trace weakpoints in master data, and to recognize many other abnormalities or peculiarities. Nevertheless, results alone are relatively worthless if not properly processed for presentation, and made accessible to persons empowered to make decisions. But not only sharing is of great importance, you must also think of the "how". If you just send your result tables with hundreds of fields and thousands of data records, dealing with them is bound to be a patchy affair.

The German Institute of internal audit (DIIR) had already its 9th symposium on “Anti-Fraud-Management” on 15th and 16th of March 2018 in Düsseldorf. Of course we joined the event also in this year and took opportunity to present our solution to everyone who was interested in a solid data analytic solution. Besides we enjoined to meet people already working with ACL and dab software and questioned them on their experience.

In an earlier blog you will already have read about self-assessments with ACL GRC. This time I would like to expand the topic a little, because with the questionnaires in the ACL GRC results module you have many more possibilities than "just" a self-assessment. Basically the results module enables you to organize and visualize, monitor and resolve events identified by data analytics results. This is where questionnaires play a central role. So we will take a detailed look at them:

The modern business environment is in a constant state of flux, presenting new challenges for risk management within companies. Risk management must keep pace with the developments. Equally, controls must be repeatedly assessed to check that they are still relevant. These self-assessments are often performed using Excel, which is an extremely time-consuming and error-prone method. However, it is now possible to perform tool-based self-assessments using ACL, and to store the results directly online. This blog post discusses self-assessments using ACL and explains how you can shelve the tedious Excel-based query process.
